The civil works of the dam are at 99.0% completion. But the mechanical and electrical works are still pending except for the installation of penstock and raw water conduit pipe. The following segments of the project are outstanding: 1. Redesigning of the electro-mechanical equipment (turbine, generator, transformer, and switchyard) as per existing infrastructure. 2. Electrical works – not completed (supply of equipment, installation, erection, and commissioning is pending). 3. Transmission line 33 KV – not completed feeding power to the national grid – only the installation of poles have been done (approx. line length is 30 km). Complete erection of 33 KV line equipment with the sag of the conductor is pending. 4. Mechanical works – only installation of penstock and raw water pipe has been completed. But the complete supply of all mechanical equipment and their installation, erection, and commissioning are still pending.
Ikere Gorge Dam is one of the two large dams constructed by the authority, as part of the master plan for the comprehensive development of water resources potential of the basins of Ogun River. It is located 33 km northeast of Iseyin, in the Iseyin local government area of Oyo state. There are four rivers, which are feeding water to the reservoir and the major share has been contributed by the Ogun River (85%). The dam was planned to generate 3,750 units per hour (@ 62.5%-PLF against installed capacity) of electricity through turbines. According to the Ogun River Basin Development Authority’s publication of March 1998 (5th edition, page 50), as of December 31, 1997, civil works on the dam were 99% completed while construction works on mechanical and electrical components stood at 95% completion.
1. Generate 6MW of electricity for dam operation and rural electrification. 2. Supply 233 mcm (million cubic meters) irrigation water to the 12,000ha middle Ogun irrigation project, of which 3,000 ha (Phase-1) is currently being developed. 3. Supply 92 mcm of raw water to the water compacts of Oyo state for treatment and distribution to Iseyin, Okeho, Iganna, and environs. 4. Supply raw 80 mcm water to Lagos state water corporation for treatment and consumption within the Lagos municipality. 5. Promote fish farming in the dam reservoir. 6. Promote tourism and recreational activities.
The rehabilitate, operate, transfer model is being used. Hydropower is a clean, efficient, and dependable and affordable source of electric power. The technology for small hydro is mature and has been in use for decades. The compact nature of a small hydropower project causes a limited impact on the flora and fauna of the project area, and has no displacement or rehabilitation impact on the human population in the region. Since the dam, reservoir, and structures of the hydropower project are already in place, no incremental impact on the population is expected due to the rehabilitation of the hydropower project. As a result of all the above mentioned there is the need to attract private sector technical expertise and financial resources for the generation and distribution of power to industrial and domestic consumers.
The primary objectives of the stakeholder consultations are as follows: It ensures that all stakeholders that relate to use of the project or those that will be affected by the development of the project are identified before design work starts. It brings together all the people relevant to the development, to create a common vision. The key stakeholders in the development of the small hydropower project are the following: • Irrigation dependent farmers/ other users • Various government departments and agencies • Project area commissioner • Local administration • River basin development authority • Land and Revenue department • Employees currently working in the dam and trade unions, if any • Community organizations • NGOs active in the area • Contractors of goods and services.
In Nigeria, there is limited power supply from the national grid, which has an adverse toll on the populace’s economic and social development. The exploitable hydropower potential in Nigeria is conservatively estimated to be about 10,000MW. Only about 19% is currently been tapped or developed. The hydropower potential in Nigeria accounts for about 29% of the total electrical supply. Ikere Gorge Dam is one of the two large dams constructed by the authority, as part of the master plan for the comprehensive development of the potential water resources of the basins of the Ogun River. The dam was planned to generate 3,750 units per hour of electricity through turbines. It will also supply drinking water to Iseyin, Okeho, Saki, and environs, and supply of water to irrigate 12,000 ha of land during the dry season, provide water for fishing, supply more than 82 million cubic meters of water to Iju Water Works in Lagos during the dry season, and provide transportation services for people living around the dam. The proposed project has Installed capacity of 6MW and estimated annual energy generation of 34,891,000 kwh.
